Eb Circular Cornet

These four projects (left & below) are the work of Robb Stewart of Arcadia, California.  Many collectors feel Robb is the true master of restoring rare and valuable brasswinds, and wait months or even years to have their instruments restored by him!  Click on the thumbnails to see before and after photos.  Robb also makes reproductions of vintage brasswinds of amazing beauty.

Cerveny Rotary Cornet

German Circular Cornet

The heavy tarnish only partially concealed previous "globby solder" repairs.

This design had a total of 6 slides – 4 of which had to be taken apart to repair dents, as well as split inner tubes and trim ferrules.

The bell had a marble stuck deep in the crook, so it had to be removed for repair.  The leadpipe was removed as well, evidently it had been reattached once before.  This shot is after both parts were reattached, and the joints cleaned up.

The repaired slides are replaced on the cornet.  You can see the repair areas are buffed through to brass, awaiting spot silver plating.

After repairs, polishing, spot silver plating and reassembly.  Suprisingly, the valves were very tight.

This is a Bb/A Buescher cornet from around 1905.  I found it sitting on a table in a local antique store for $60 – a bargain, until you consider the 24+ hours I put into its restoration.  Considering the fact that it hadn't been in a hard case, it was fairly dent-free, and only the leadpipe showed excessive plating wear.   But several of the slides had previous repairs, which proved to be the biggest challenge.  (restoration by Nick DeCarlis)
